​Saki Mafundikwa

Founder & Director of Zimbabwe Institute of Vigital Arts (ziva) / Graphic Designer, Design Educator, Author, Filmmaker, Artist, Farmer

​Saki Mafundikwa is the founder and director of the Zimbabwe Institute of Vigital Arts (ZIVA) a design and new media college in Harare. He has an MFA in Graphic Design from Yale University. He founded ZIVA in 1999 after working in New York City as an​ art director and design educator. His book, Afrikan Alphabets: the​ Story of Writing in Afrika was published in 2004 and is currently out of print.

Saki​ is award-winning film, Shungu: The Resilience of a​ People premiered at 2009’s International Documentary Film​ Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). ​Saki spoke at TED2013 in Long Beach​ and received 2022’s Lifetime Achievement Award from the UK’s​ Design &​ Art Direction (D&AD). He was awarded an Honorary​ Doctorate by the University of the Arts London (UAL) in 2023. He​ is currently working on a revised edition of Afrikan Alphabets​ which he hopes to publish in 2026.He lives on his farm in​ Mhondoro, Zimbabwe.
