Project Description:
My comic book cover is based on a 1st edition comic book style and takes inspiration from the iconic superhero Thor. There are many people in our country and the world who don’t get to find their true worth in life. therefore want to celebrate the power of being the “chosen one” and seeing that who our own versions of a superhero are. There are many people who through their lives want to be seen and valued. Many people don’t have the opportunity to be their true selves which leads in feeling lost. I therefore wanted to emphasize that from a young age we all have purpose, and our true inner superhero does exist in its own form. Thors hammer has a strong meaning behind it within Norse mythology representing Strength, protection and the duality of creation and power. These characteristics belong in all of us and it's just about finding these elements through finding who we are. Therefore overall, the deeper meaning is to encourage people to just be themselves even when it feels to difficult or impossible as the only way to move forward in life is knowing what our own superpower is. In a time where we suppress who we are these needs to be praised and seen as a strength of being worthy

Project Innovation / Specification:
The innovation sits in the reinterpretation of traditional superhero narratives through a conceptual and culturally reflective design approach. Through my project drawing inspiration from the classic first edition comic book covers, and the iconic symbolism linked with Thor, my design moves the idea of the "chosen" one away from a single hero figure and redirects it as a universal human experience. Instead of celebrating a unreachable hero, my design places everyday individuals as their own versions of a superhero, encouraging audiences to see their inherent strengths and personal meaning. Overall African guard of thunder focuses on noticing the authentic visual language of vintage comic design covers, through combining historical comic books design conventions with a modern social narrative my project develops an innovative visual outcome which is bridging popular culture, storytelling and personal empowerment

Local and Regional Impacts of the Project:
Within a South African context this project speaks to the importance of identity, self-worth and even belonging in a society formed by diverse cultures and histories. Many young South Africans face social, economic and cultural pressures which can make it hard to feel seen or even valued. Through reimagining the symbolism of Thor's hammer as a metaphor for inner strength and purpose, the comic book celebrates the idea that everyone holds their own power and worth. On a regional scale it inspires youth to embrace their uniqueness and cultural identity, reminding them that their voices, stories and talents do matter. The project encourages empowerment and self-belief, emphasizing that being true to ourselves is a powerful form of strength within South African communities.
