Project Description:
The Rinne Adire Tie & Dye Pants and Top Set is a striking ensemble crafted from premium fabric and adorned with vibrant, hand-dyed patterns.
Project Innovation / Specification:
Adire is a Yoruba cloth-dyeing tradition from southwestern Nigeria (especially Abeokuta and Ibadan) that uses resist techniques to keep dye off selected areas and form patterns. Methods include Adire Oniko (tying raffia around stones or seeds to create circular motifs), Adire Eléko (painting designs with cassava-starch paste), and Adire Alabere (stitch-resist sewing with raffia). Traditionally, the fabric is repeatedly dipped—often 25+ times—into fermented natural indigo dye (Elu) to achieve a deep blue-black, though modern adire now commonly features brighter colours and synthetic dyes. Beyond fashion, it’s a handmade art form where symbols and patterns communicate cultural stories and messages.
Project Sustainability Approach:
The project employs a made-to-order model, reducing waste. Any unused fabric is repurposed for smaller projects, such as stuffed toys.
Local and Regional Impacts of the Project:
The product is traditionally made by women, thus generating a stable income for the family through this project over the years.
