Product Description:
This wall-mounted sculpture reimagines the traditional shield as a dynamic exploration of boundary and relief. By layering rhythmic textures against deep, matte-black geometry, the piece creates a visual dialogue between shadow and light. It is a study in expansion; the sharp, chevron-like forms—inspired by Imigongo geometry—purposefully extend beyond their own background, inviting the viewer to consider the unexpected beauty when a form transcends its perceived limits. To bridge the gap between artisanal heritage and modern accessibility, the work is realized in two distinct iterations: a hand-finished Muvura wood edition that honors the raw, tactile nature of the material, and a refined MDF version designed to bring this contemporary cultural dialogue into a broader range of spaces.
Product Sustainability Approach:
Our approach to sustainability is rooted in a balance between cultural preservation and resource efficiency. By utilizing Muvura wood, a locally sourced Rwandan hardwood, I am able to support regional forestry and artisanal craftsmanship while ensuring the longevity of the piece through the wood’s natural durability. The introduction of a version crafted from MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) is a deliberate choice to enhance material yield and reduce waste. By repurposing wood fibers into a stable, high-precision medium, I can achieve the intricate, Imigongo-inspired geometric relief with minimal off-cuts. This dual-material strategy not only democratizes the design by offering a more accessible price point but also ensures that the production process remains adaptable and conscious of its environmental footprint.
