Project Description:
Sediba sa Tlou is a township based water delivery, refill, and purification service in Parys, Free State, South Africa created to serve a community where consistent access to running tap water is not always guaranteed. The mural was designed to communicate the brand’s service clearly, while also reflecting the everyday realities, resilience and spirit of township life. Rooted in the symbolism of the elephant as strength, care and community, the project needed to do more than decorate a wall. It had to build trust, visibility and recognition for a business that provides an essential service. The final 18 metre mural turned that challenge into a bold visual story. Through expressive portraits, water related symbols, a delivery truck carrying a branded JoJo tank, and the presence of the elephant woven into the composition, the artwork connects the brand directly to the people and routines it serves. The result is a mural that feels local, meaningful and instantly recognisable, balancing public storytelling with clear service communication at scale.

Project Innovation / Specification:
The innovation in this project came from treating a service based business as a cultural and community story rather than simply a utility brand. Instead of relying on straightforward signage or a product led message, the mural translated water delivery into a human visual narrative rooted in township life. Portraits, symbolic elements and expressive pattern work were used to show water not just as a service, but as something tied to dignity, care and daily living. The mural was also innovative in the way it merged branding with public art. The elephant, the branded JoJo tank, the truck and the water symbols all reinforce the business clearly, while the mural still reads as a vibrant piece of local storytelling. This balance between functional communication and emotional connection gave the project a stronger sense of place and made the brand more memorable within its own community.

Project Sustainability Approach:
Sustainability in this project was approached through social relevance, durability and long term community visibility. The mural promotes a business that provides access to clean, reliable water, which is itself tied to everyday wellbeing and an improved quality of life in the community it serves. By creating a strong and lasting visual identity on a large public wall, the project also supports long term recognition without relying only on short term promotional materials. There is also a cultural sustainability layer in the way the mural celebrates township life and reflects the people it is meant to serve. Rather than applying a generic visual solution, the project draws from local identity, familiar experiences and community symbolism to create something that feels owned by place. In that way, the mural supports both the practical sustainability of the brand and the social value of representation.

Local and Regional Impacts of the Project:
Locally, the project strengthened Sediba sa Tlou’s visibility in Parys by turning a large public wall into a clear and memorable expression of the brand and its water services. The mural made the business easier to recognise while reflecting township life, local identity and the everyday importance of clean, reliable water. Regionally, the project shows how public art can help township based businesses communicate with more meaning and cultural relevance. It demonstrates how branding can support both service awareness and representation, while creating a visual language that speaks proudly to the realities of smaller communities.
