Project Description:
The I LOVE SHONA series is designed to help young children in the diaspora discover the Shona language. Often, children’s books are the first introduction they have to reading and learning, and by creating a book that is both engaging and educational, children can not only learn Shona itself but also the cultural traditions and practices associated with it. Beautifully designed books The beautiful illustrations in the book can also help to spark children’s imaginations and encourage them to engage with the language and culture on a deeper level.

Project Innovation / Specification:
I LOVE SHONA reimagines early childhood language learning for diaspora families. Instead of dry vocabulary lists, the series blends beautifully illustrated storytelling with embedded everyday Shona words, making language acquisition natural and emotionally engaging. Designed for both Shona and non-Shona speakers, the books balance cultural authenticity with accessibility. The format choices (paperback and hardcover) increase reach, while the visual richness supports comprehension and imagination. It is not just a language tool but a culturally grounded reading experience.

Project Sustainability Approach:
The project promotes cultural sustainability by preserving and transmitting the Shona language to the next generation in the diaspora. By embedding language in joyful storytelling, children build lasting emotional connections to their heritage. The books are designed for repeated reading, encouraging daily practice and long-term language retention. Print formats ensure durability, while scalable publishing allows expansion of the series. By strengthening identity and cultural literacy early, the project sustains both language and community continuity over time.

Local and Regional Impacts of the Project:
The series supports diaspora families across the UK, Australia, and beyond in reconnecting children with Zimbabwean culture. Reviews show children asking to read the books daily and eagerly learning new Shona words, strengthening language confidence at home. Parents highlight how the books bridge cultural gaps in blended or diaspora families. Regionally, the project elevates Zimbabwean stories and aesthetics in children’s publishing, fostering pride, representation, and cultural visibility in global markets.
