Project Description:
The Grand Lighthouse Promenade reimagines the coastal front of Jijel by creating a public space that connects the historic lighthouse with the sea. The design promotes calm, sustainable movement through pedestrian and cycling paths, green areas, and minimal architecture that respects the site’s coastal identity. Using local materials and natural light, the project aims to offer a social and cultural space that celebrates Jijel’s Mediterranean character in a contemporary and sustainable way
Project Innovation / Specification:
The project integrates heritage and sustainability through a design that respects the natural landscape while enhancing public accessibility. Innovative use of local materials, eco-friendly lighting, and modular seating elements ensures environmental harmony and low maintenance. The promenade’s layout encourages community interaction and offers flexible zones for leisure, culture, and tourism. Its design highlights a balance between tradition and modernity, making it a model for sustainable coastal development in Algeria.
Project Sustainability Approach:
The project emphasizes environmental responsibility by integrating natural resources and biodiversity into its design. Rainwater collection systems are used for irrigation, while solar energy powers lighting and small installations along the promenade. The layout maximizes natural sunlight and ventilation to reduce energy consumption. A variety of native and adaptive tree species are planted to enhance shade, support local biodiversity, and create a dynamic visual landscape. Combined with locally sourced materials, these strategies ensure a sustainable, self-sufficient, and ecologically balanced coastal space.
Local and Regional Impacts of the Project:
The project revitalizes Jijel’s coastline by offering a welcoming space for leisure, social interaction, and cultural exchange. It enhances community well-being by providing areas for walking, relaxation, and outdoor activities, while encouraging eco-tourism and local craftsmanship. Regionally, it serves as a benchmark for sustainable coastal development, combining heritage preservation with innovative design. Through the use of local materials, diverse trees, and renewable energy, the project strengthens the regional economy, promotes environmental awareness, and inspires future community-oriented initiatives along Algeria’s Mediterranean coast.
