Project Description:
Thirty years ago, Hann Bay in Dakar was a real gem on the African coastline. Today, however, it is a victim of rapid urbanisation and poor waste management, ranking among the most polluted bays on the continent. In an effort to reverse this alarming trend, the government, supported by the European Union, has launched an ambitious clean-up project. This includes revitalising neighbourhoods, improving waste collection and building a wastewater treatment plant.
Project Sustainability Approach:
While waste treatment and clean-up are essential, the key challenge lies in preventing pollution in the first place. To raise public awareness, three-year campaigns have been launched on television, social media and outdoor advertising. These deliberately hard-hitting campaigns aim to spark debate, highlight the inconsistency of people's behaviour, and warn of a dystopian future. Local actions were also necessary at the heart of this initiative to promote awareness and behavioural change. Door-to-door visits and beach clean-up operations were organised.
Local and Regional Impacts of the Project:
Posters were created to advertise the campaign. To stand out from conventional media and maximise impact, the visual design was entrusted to Tampidaro, a young urban painter from Dakar who is renowned for depicting miraculous urban chaos and the lives of its inhabitants. The three visuals created were incorporated into the campaign materials (street poster) and stickers were affixed to the collection bins. This artistic approach was warmly welcomed by young people and played a key role in raising awareness of the ecological crisis in Hann Bay and strengthening youth engagement.
