Project Description:
This residential concept explores what a new generation of African design can look like when interpreted from within the continent itself. Rather than presenting African design as a single aesthetic, the project celebrates the diversity of lived experiences that shape contemporary African homes. The house is designed as a modern family residence where cultural memory and contemporary living coexist naturally. Locally crafted furniture, thoughtful material choices, and spatial openness create an environment where everyday life becomes a reflection of identity, community, and evolving tradition. The design demonstrates how modern African interiors can remain culturally rooted while embracing contemporary spatial expression.

Project Innovation / Specification:
The innovation of the project lies in its reinterpretation of African design through a contemporary residential lens. Instead of relying on literal or stereotypical references, the design translates cultural narratives into spatial strategies, colour relationships, and locally informed material choices. Furniture, lighting, and interior elements are conceived as part of a broader design language, allowing objects and spaces to work together as a cohesive story. By integrating artisan craftsmanship with modern architectural planning, the project proposes an approach where cultural expression evolves naturally within contemporary design practice.

Project Sustainability Approach:
Sustainability in the project is approached through material selection, local collaboration, and long-term usability. Locally sourced materials and artisan-made elements reduce transportation impact while supporting regional craftsmanship and manufacturing networks. Natural materials such as timber and durable finishes were selected to ensure longevity and adaptability within the home. Large openings and spatial planning allow natural light to shape the interior environment, reducing reliance on artificial lighting during the day. By prioritizing durability, local sourcing, and timeless design, the project promotes sustainability through both environmental awareness and long-term relevance.

Local and Regional Impacts of the Project:
The project highlights the value of local artisans, makers, and material suppliers as integral contributors to contemporary design. By incorporating locally crafted furniture and regionally sourced materials, the design supports creative industries and strengthens connections between architecture, interior design, and craftsmanship. On a broader level, the project contributes to the ongoing conversation around modern African design by presenting a residential environment that reflects the diversity, creativity, and evolving identity of the continent. It encourages a perspective where African design is understood as dynamic and forward-looking rather than confined to historical or stylistic expectations.
