Project Description:
Mzansi Food Cult is a research-driven Instagram platform that translates academic design research into a practical, visual identity system for the ethical representation of South African cultural food online. Developed as part of a Master’s research project, the platform operationalises the CULTURE ON THE PLATE guidelines—a set of design and visual literacy principles created to address cultural misrepresentation, stereotyping, and culinary appropriation on social media. Using Instagram as a live testing environment, the project demonstrates how food photography, storytelling, layout systems, captions, and hashtags can be used to represent culture with authenticity, respect, and inclusivity. Content is structured into clear post types—educational carousels, food storytelling features, photography tips, and community spotlights—supported by a consistent visual system. Rather than functioning as a static guideline document, Mzansi Food Cult operates as a dynamic design intervention, combining visual communication, cultural research, and audience engagement to educate content creators and audiences while fostering cross-cultural appreciation through food.
Project Innovation / Specification:
Mzansi Food Cult’s innovation lies in positioning an Instagram account as a design system and applied research outcome, rather than a promotional or lifestyle food page. The project bridges the gap between academic theory and real-world digital practice by embedding visual literacy principles directly into social media content formats. The CULTURE ON THE PLATE guidelines integrate design elements, storytelling strategies, and cultural research into actionable steps for planning, creating, posting, and engaging with food content online. These guidelines are implemented through carousels, reels, captions, and hashtag strategies, allowing users to learn through observation and participation. The platform also reframes food photography as a tool for cultural communication rather than aesthetic consumption. By encouraging research, community collaboration, attribution, and reflective engagement, the project challenges dominant global food trends that often exoticise African cuisine. Its modular structure allows the system to be adapted by designers, influencers, restaurants, and educators, making it both scalable and transferable across regions and platforms.
Project Sustainability Approach:
The sustainability approach of Mzansi Food Cult is cultural, social, and environmental. Culturally, the project promotes long-term sustainability by advocating for respectful representation, community engagement, and the preservation of food knowledge through accurate storytelling. By improving visual literacy, it reduces the risk of cultural appropriation and misrepresentation in digital spaces. Social sustainability is addressed through community participation and responsiveness. The platform encourages dialogue, feedback, and collaboration with local cooks, creators, and food communities, ensuring that representation is not extractive but participatory. Content can be continuously updated, refined, and expanded based on audience interaction and analytics. Environmentally, the guidelines actively promote local sourcing, seasonal ingredients, sustainable food practices, and reduced food waste. By highlighting local producers and traditional practices, the project supports more conscious consumption patterns. Its digital-first format further reduces material waste, making Instagram a low-impact yet high-reach medium for sustainable design education.
Local and Regional Impacts of the Project:
Mzansi Food Cult contributes to local and regional impact by amplifying South African food cultures through a respectful, design-led framework rooted in local knowledge. It supports local creators, chefs, home cooks, and food businesses by giving visibility to authentic practices and encouraging ethical collaboration and crediting. Regionally, the project challenges homogenised global food aesthetics by foregrounding African narratives, ingredients, and rituals. It fosters cross-cultural exchange and education, allowing audiences to engage with diverse cuisines beyond stereotypes. As an open and adaptable system, the guidelines can be applied across African regions, strengthening cultural representation while positioning design as a tool for social understanding and cultural preservation.
