Project Description:
Délaissé Désiré Concept Store. A place of exchange, creativity, and sales built around upcycling. It aims to bridge this gap in its desirability by making upcycling attractive to Beninese middle class. By offering practical and decorative items, originating from a local know-how, revisited with a contemporary approach, the goal is to enhance upcycling as a desirable and modern alternative. The space will bring together sales, workshops, material library and meeting place, creating a bridge between craftsmen, designers and consumers. The store aims to change the perception of upcycling and encourage sustainable consumption more local and sustainable.
Project Sustainability Approach:
Upcycling is the process of transforming an existing material or product by revalorizing it aesthetically or functionally, often with a higher value, for "ecological" and "economic" purposes. In Benin, upcycling is often seen as a traditional practice rather than a modern one. new trend. Ingenuity and material recovery are deeply rooted in everyday life, not out of concern for fashion or ecology, but out of necessity for accessibility and economy.
Local and Regional Impacts of the Project:
Upcycling in Cotonou reveals a social paradox: it meets the needs of the working class with practical and affordable objects, and seduces the more affluent through art and design. On the other hand, the emerging middle class, attracted by new products perceived as modern, remains on the sidelines. This void and lack of interest hinder the adoption of upcycling as a universal practice. And this leads us to the following problem: How promoting the desirability of upcycling to intermediate social groups in Benin (an emerging and influential but little-studied class) can encourage the adoption of sustainable and local consumption and production practices?
