Product Description:
The Koto is a sculptural media cabinet inspired by the flowing form of a single musical note. Crafted from solid timber using traditional furniture-making techniques, the piece explores movement, balance, and restraint through a continuous curved structure that bends gracefully before resolving into functional storage. The design draws its name from the Japanese koto, a stringed instrument known for its elegance and expressive simplicity. In the same spirit, the cabinet’s form seeks to capture a sense of rhythm and motion within a static object. The sweeping curve becomes both the defining visual gesture and the structural backbone of the piece. Rooted in a philosophy of refined modernism, The Koto reduces furniture to essential gestures while celebrating the warmth and tactile beauty of wood. Each element is carefully shaped and assembled by hand, highlighting the dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. Both functional and sculptural, The Koto occupies the space between furniture and art, inviting the viewer to experience movement, music, and material in a single form.
Product Innovation / Specification:
The Koto is handcrafted from solid American walnut, selected for its rich tone, stability, and expressive grain. The cabinet’s defining feature is its continuous curved form, which acts as both a sculptural gesture and the primary structural element of the piece. The flowing structure creates a sense of movement while maintaining strength and balance through carefully executed joinery and shaping. Two inlaid brass strips are integrated into the top surface, introducing a subtle contrast between warm metal and natural timber. These linear accents reference the strings of the instrument that inspired the piece while adding refinement and visual rhythm to the composition. Designed as a functional media cabinet, the internal storage is proportioned to accommodate audio equipment and vinyl records while maintaining a clean, minimal exterior. The piece reflects a philosophy of refined modernism - reducing furniture to essential forms while celebrating the tactile qualities of natural materials. The cabinet is individually crafted, emphasizing the intersection of traditional craftsmanship, sculptural design, and contemporary furniture making.
Product Sustainability Approach:
The piece was designed and constructed as a one-off work of furniture, prioritising longevity, durability, and timeless design over mass production. By focusing on a single, carefully crafted object, the approach encourages long-term ownership rather than disposable consumption. The cabinet is made from solid American walnut, a durable natural material chosen for its strength, stability, and ability to age gracefully over time. Solid timber construction allows the piece to be maintained, repaired, and refinished if necessary, ensuring it can remain in use for generations. Brass detailing was selected for its longevity and recyclability, while the overall design avoids unnecessary components or synthetic materials. Traditional furniture-making techniques were used throughout, resulting in a structure that relies on craftsmanship and material integrity rather than complex hardware. The intention is to create a lasting object that will develop character over time, reinforcing the idea that well-made furniture should endure rather than be replaced.
Local and Regional Impacts of the Product:
The piece reflects the continued relevance of handcrafted furniture within a contemporary design landscape. By focusing on traditional furniture-making techniques and natural materials, it supports the preservation of skilled craftsmanship and the cultural value of making. Produced locally in Cape Town, the work contributes to the growing recognition of South African design and contemporary craft on an international stage. It highlights the ability of independent makers to create original, high-quality furniture that competes globally while remaining rooted in regional craft traditions. Through its emphasis on durability and timeless design, the piece promotes an alternative to mass-produced furniture, encouraging a culture of longevity, repair, and appreciation for handmade objects.
