Product Description:
Terracotta Current is a 40-meter-long, hand-folded paper tessellation, meticulously crafted for the concept store, Dokan. Suspended as a continuous, flowing form, the installation transforms the retail environment using only shades of warm orange, terracotta, and the precise geometry of folded acid-free paper. What appears as a singular, organic wave is the result of over two weeks of dedicated hand-folding, celebrating the tension between digital precision and human touch, and redefining the role of craft in contemporary commercial spaces. Dokan is a concept store not just a shop; it’s a curated experience. My paper installation was the centerpiece of that experience. It is meant to be a long term installation. The flow of folds and the way paper is installed reflects the warmth, earth and heritage that aligns with Dokan aesthetic. In addition complimenting the products and giving people a grounded feel walking through the space by choosing Terracotta and Orange colors.

Product Innovation / Specification:
The first paper installation in Cairo alters the perception of the retail environment drawing the eye upward, making the ceiling feel lower and cozier. The chosen tessellation was selected for its structural rigidity. When folded, it can hold its shape across a vast distance without sagging, while its inherent flexibility allows the entire 40-meter length to be curved and draped in space without losing the integrity of the individual folds. Over 50 (70x100cm) sheets were meticulously pre-scored and hand-folded transforming a flat material into a three-dimensional landscape. A grid of fishing thread was creating in the skylight ceiling to create a web for paper to hang freely. The skylight allow natural light to cross through the paper tessellation creating an intricate geometric shadows with directional light.

Product Sustainability Approach:
A high quality acid free paper is used ensuring longevity for a commercial installation. It signals a commitment to quality and permanence, elevating the work beyond temporary decoration. 180 gsm paper was chosen for its ability to hold a fold while being pliable enough to drape. The acid‑free paper’s archival quality ensures the work will remain structurally sound and visually vibrant for years, reducing the need for replacement or maintenance.

Local and Regional Impacts of the Product:
The warm terracotta and orange palette was chosen to echo the natural earth tones of the region’s landscape and architectural heritage. It transforms Dokan from a mere retail space into a destination that reflects regional aesthetics and values, attracting both local customers and visitors who seek authentic, place‑based experiences. The project also fostered collaboration between the concept store, an independent artisan, local installers and local photographer, creating a ripple effect of creative partnerships within the regional creative economy.
