Product Description:
Urbancycle is an urban recycling machine designed to transform plastic waste directly within public space. Residents can bring plastic collected from their homes or picked up in the streets and feed it into the machine. The system shreds the plastic into small fragments, melts the material, and injects it into molds to create new recycled components. The project is conceived as a network of machines distributed across the city rather than a single installation. Each machine produces specific parts that can later be combined to assemble useful or educational objects. By distributing production across several locations, the system encourages movement through the city and repeated interaction with the machines. Urbancycle makes the transformation of waste visible and understandable. Instead of sending plastic to distant recycling infrastructures, the material is processed locally and immediately reused, revealing the hidden potential of plastic as a resource already present in the urban environment.

Product Innovation / Specification:
The innovation of Urbancycle lies in transforming recycling into a direct and participatory urban experience. The machine follows a mainly low-tech approach where users activate each stage of the process through large mechanical handles. By turning the handles, residents shred the plastic, prepare the material for melting, and finally inject it into molds to produce new components. This physical interaction allows people to understand how plastic can be transformed and reused. Instead of being a distant technical system managed only by infrastructures, recycling becomes an activity that citizens can experience themselves. The project proposes a form of local and immediate recycling, where waste collected in the surrounding streets can quickly be converted into usable elements. By making the process visible and accessible, the machine encourages engagement with an environmental issue while demonstrating the value of a material often perceived only as waste.

Product Sustainability Approach:
The sustainability of Urbancycle is based on extending the life cycle of plastic through local transformation and long-term use. The machine produces modular components designed to be assembled into durable objects rather than short-lived products. These pieces can be reused in different constructions, allowing objects to evolve and adapt over time. A key aspect of the system is the regular renewal of molds. New molds can introduce new objects, encouraging continued participation and preventing the repetitive production of identical items. This evolving catalog of objects keeps the community engaged while ensuring that the recycled material remains useful. The system also opens possibilities for educational tools, simple urban equipment, or everyday objects produced from locally collected plastic. By giving the material a clear function and encouraging long-term use, the project promotes a more responsible relationship with resources.

Local and Regional Impacts of the Product:
Urbancycle aims to reduce plastic waste in urban environments while encouraging citizens to take part in addressing the issue. By allowing residents to transform plastic collected from streets or households, the system promotes a more active role in waste management and urban cleanliness. Reducing plastic accumulation in cities also helps limit its spread into rivers and eventually oceans, where it harms ecosystems. Acting locally therefore contributes to addressing a broader environmental challenge. Installed in different locations across a city, the machines form a network of accessible recycling points that encourage learning and engagement, particularly among younger generations, while demonstrating that plastic waste can become a valuable local resource.
