Project Description:
Architectural Description “Balance of Volumes and Material” Villa Loci is a private residence designed for a senegalise photographer in Senegal. The project stems from the dialogue between contemporary language and local materials, articulated in distinct functional blocks: living area, bedrooms, photographic studio, and upper suite, all connected by a central volume marked by three arches a tribute to the ancient architecture. The red stone, local wood, and reed define a warm, tactile aesthetic rooted in the land. The double-pitched roof, a reinterpretation of traditional coverings, and the wooden screens that filter the light create a harmony between form and function. The result is a quiet, precise architecture that merges constructive tradition and compositional modernity, celebrating light as the true protagonist of the living space.
Project Innovation / Specification:
Innovation “The House as a Responsive Organism” The innovation of Villa Loci extends beyond its technical features to embrace the entire architectural organism, from structure to landscape. Vertical and horizontal surfaces are conceived as active systems: the green roof and hanging gardens turn the envelope into living, accessible spaces that enhance thermal insulation, manage rainwater, and improve both interior and exterior microclimates. Natural materials, red stone, local wood, and reed, are combined with integrated systems and bioclimatic strategies, such as wooden sun-screens that filter light and calibrated openings that promote natural ventilation. The professional 8×8 m cyclorama is one of the villa’s distinctive elements, yet innovation here lies equally in the choice of green roofs and elevated gardens that reduce water runoff and enhance comfort. Villa Loci becomes a resilient organism, one that adapts to climate, filters light, and merges seamlessly with its landscape.
Project Sustainability Approach:
Sustainability Approach – “Walking Above One’s Own Waters” The sustainability of Villa Loci is both technical and symbolic. The project integrates a system for recovering greywater from the kitchen and bathrooms, which, once filtered, is reused to irrigate the garden and feed a shallow reflecting pool that can be walked upon; a poetic gesture narrating the virtuous cycle of resources. The chosen materials (red stone, wood, and reed) are local and natural, with low environmental impact and excellent insulating properties. The building’s orientation and solar screens regulate sun exposure, reducing energy demand and improving indoor comfort. Every choice, from the roof’s design to water reuse, contributes to making the house a self-regenerating organism, fully integrated into the local climate and culture.
Local and Regional Impacts of the Project:
“A Dialogue with the Territory” Villa Loci is born from the genius loci, where architecture and landscape exist in harmony. The red stone, local wood, and reed embody the memory of the land and the craftsmanship of those who shaped them. The project enhances local skills and artisanal supply chains, introducing contemporary techniques that respect and enrich regional identity. Responding to Senegal’s climate and light through natural and bioclimatic solutions, the house becomes a replicable model of sustainable architecture for West Africa. More than a residence, Villa Loïc is a cultural bridge between tradition and innovation, an architecture that grows from the land and gives value back to it.
