Project Description:
Silence the Guns is a trans-disciplinary creative work presented through fashion, textile design, sound, and performance. The project explores the historical and emotional consequences of war, conflict, and inherited trauma, using clothing as a narrative medium. Self-designed textiles and haute-couture garments are staged within a performative environment to create an immersive experience rather than a conventional fashion presentation. The work reflects on the lingering psychological and cultural wounds shaped by Africa’s historical encounters with violence and displacement. Central to the concept is the transformation of trauma into an expression of dignity, resilience, and collective healing. Symbolic elements, including sculptural forms and sacred horn motifs, reinforce themes of memory, identity, and peace. Silence the Guns functions as both visual artwork and emotional experience, positioning fashion as a vehicle for storytelling, reflection, and social dialogue.

Project Innovation / Specification:
The project challenges traditional boundaries between fashion, art, and performance by adopting a trans-disciplinary methodology. Rather than treating garments solely as products, the work integrates textile design, sound creation, symbolic objects, and choreographed staging into a unified artistic composition. Innovation lies in: Narrative-Driven Garment Design: Textiles and silhouettes operate as carriers of meaning, embedding historical, emotional, and cultural narratives. Trans-Disciplinary Integration: Fashion, performance, and sound are developed simultaneously to create a cohesive experiential environment. Symbolic Visual Language: Recurring motifs and sculptural elements function as conceptual devices, extending beyond aesthetics into cultural and philosophical commentary. Emotional Engagement: The presentation prioritizes audience experience, encouraging reflection, empathy, and interpretation rather than passive viewing. This approach reframes fashion as a form of contemporary artistic expression capable of addressing complex socio-political themes.

Project Sustainability Approach:
Sustainability within Silence the Guns is addressed through cultural, emotional, and conceptual dimensions rather than purely material considerations. Cultural Sustainability: The project preserves and reinterprets African visual languages, symbolism, and identity narratives, contributing to the continuity and evolution of cultural heritage. Emotional Sustainability: By transforming themes of trauma, conflict, and resilience into creative expression, the work promotes dialogue, awareness, and collective reflection. Conceptual Longevity: The garments and textiles are designed as timeless narrative pieces rather than trend-driven items, encouraging enduring relevance. Responsible Meaning-Making: The project positions fashion as a medium for consciousness, responsibility, and social engagement rather than disposable consumption. This framework broadens sustainability to include memory, identity, and collective healing as essential components of long-term creative impact.
