Project Description:
The Sankofa Display font emerged as a crucial component of the broader Sankofa Design System Project, which advocates for cultural diversity and inclusivity in digital design. Sankofa Display encourages designers to draw from their backgrounds and heritage for inspiration, empowering them to create distinct, culturally resonant designs. Batsi's embrace of his African heritage enabled him to contribute a typeface to Google Fonts that celebrates African culture.
Project Innovation / Specification:
Sankofa Display is a display typeface commissioned by Google as part of its initiative to expand African representation on Google Fonts. Inspired by the Akan concept of “Sankofa” — returning to the past to inform the future — the typeface blends contemporary digital clarity with African visual rhythm and expression. Designed for headlines and expressive use, Sankofa Display supports modern UI, branding, and editorial contexts while carrying cultural depth. The font was officially released on Google Fonts and featured in Google Material 3’s launch video, demonstrating its relevance in global design systems and modern product ecosystems.
Project Sustainability Approach:
The sustainability of Sankofa Display is rooted in open access, cultural longevity, and global distribution. By being freely available on Google Fonts, the typeface removes economic barriers to high-quality design tools, ensuring long-term use across education, startups, and large organizations. Its inclusion in Material 3 embeds the font into widely adopted design systems, increasing durability and relevance over time. Culturally, the font contributes to sustainable representation by ensuring African-inspired design is not trend-based but structurally integrated into mainstream digital platforms.
Local and Regional Impacts of the Project:
Sankofa Display contributes to greater visibility and legitimacy for African design within global digital products. Locally and regionally, it provides African designers, developers, and creators with a culturally resonant typeface that can be used in professional, global-facing work without compromise. The project signals that African visual languages belong at the core of modern design systems, not the margins. By being commissioned and distributed by Google, it opens pathways for future African-led contributions to global design infrastructure, strengthening regional creative confidence and representation.
