Ousmane MBAYE, a Senegalese designer, is a key figure in contemporary African design. Coming from an unconventional background, he learned his craft in the field, far from traditional academic paths. Trained at a very young age in manual trades alongside his father, he developed an intuitive approach where technique meets a strong aesthetic sensibility.
A specialist in working with metal, he transforms raw materials into everyday objects: storage furniture, lamps, seating. For him, design goes beyond form—it questions our lifestyles, our consumption habits, and seeks sustainable solutions to improve daily life. He now enriches his work with other materials (copper, wood, etc.) and recently launched a line of artisanal candles inspired by his childhood. His creations are recognisable by their unique aesthetic and distinctive use of colour.
Active on the international scene—from New York to Tokyo, via Lagos and Barcelona—Ousmane MBAYE is also very involved in Senegal, where he designs interiors for hotels, restaurants, and private clients. As the Design Curator for the 2024 Biennale of Contemporary African Art, he embodies a new generation of African creatives, blending craftsmanship with a global vision.
